Feathers

In the face of today’s global reality, I aim to confront many difficult issues with my studio practice. However in the summer of 2023, I turned my attention to an unexpected subject. Walking in the nearby woods I discovered a scattering of blue feathers on the forest floor, the evidence of a predator attack. The splendor of bird feathers is a quiet reminder that beauty always exists. They are remarkable in the way they look and for their intricate microstructure. Rendering their diverse forms in detailed colored pencil drawings on Mylar is like a meditation. The translucent, silky surface of the Mylar allows me to apply color in thinly layered veils as I observe the detailed nuance of my subject.
